White Marks After Weld Cleaning: What They Are and How to Deal With Them
The machine did what it was supposed to. The heat tint is gone, the seam is bright, and the whole thing took a couple of minutes. Then you step back and there is a chalky white haze sitting around the weld where there was not one before.
This comes up often enough on the phone that it is worth setting out properly. The short version: it is almost never the machine, it is usually technique or what happened after the cleaning, and it is fixable.

It is not a fault with the machine
The first thing most people assume is that something has gone wrong with the unit or the settings. In our experience that is rarely where the problem is. Electrolytic weld cleaning works by passing current through a fluid held against the steel, and white marking is generally about what that fluid does after the current stops — not about the current itself.
So before you start changing power settings, look at the four things below.
Four things to check in your technique
Temperature. Cleaning stainless while it is still warm from welding is the single most common cause we come across. Fluid flashes off the surface almost immediately and leaves its residue behind. Let the work cool. It costs you a few minutes and saves you a rework.
Dwell time. Going over the same patch again and again does not make it cleaner past a certain point — it just puts more fluid on the surface than your rinse is going to lift. If the tint is not coming off, the answer is usually a different fluid rather than more passes.
Neutralising. This is the step that gets skipped when a job is running late, and it is the step that decides whether you get marking. NC500 exists for this. Use it as part of the job then rinse off, not as tidying up afterwards.
Drying. Letting a panel air-dry gives whatever is left on the surface time to sit and dry in place. Dry it off properly with paper roll and an airline if possible instead.
Fluid choice matters more than people expect
There is a temptation to run one fluid for everything. It works, up to a point, and then you spend the time you saved dealing with the finish.

Matching the fluid to the job — rather than reaching for the strongest thing on the shelf every time — is one of the more reliable ways to stop marking before it starts.
When the marks are already there
None of the above helps with the panel sitting in front of you right now. For that you need a product made for the job.
Do not reach for an abrasive. A flap disc or a Scotchbrite pad will take the mark off by taking the finish off, and you will be left with a patch that does not match what is around it. On a bright finish that is a bigger problem than the mark was.
NitroClean Anti-Whiting Powder is made specifically for removing white marks from stainless, and it takes grease and stains with it. Used with the NitroClean Activator: gloves on, spray the Activator onto a cloth, dip it in the powder, work it into a creamy lather over the surface, spray the Activator again, dry with paper towels, then finish with NitroClean Stainless Steel Cleaner.
The same rule applies as everywhere else in this article: not on hot stainless. Let it cool.
It is phosphate and chlorine free, which is worth knowing if your work goes into food, pharmaceutical or water treatment applications where those are restricted.
Worth keeping on the shelf
Most shops that clean stainless regularly will hit white marking at some point — a hot job, a rushed finish, a panel left over a lunch break. Having the powder in the cupboard turns that from a rework into a ten minute fix.
